General Canonical Visitation

General Delegation of Our Lady of Guadalupe

 

From 31 August to 22 September, the Superior General, Brother Jesús Etayo, has been conducting the General Canonical Visitation to the General Delegation of Mexico and Central America, which comprises Mexico, Cuba and Honduras.

 

This Superior General is being accompanied on the Visitation by Brother Moisés Martín from the General Curia, as the Director of the Missions and International Cooperation Office, and Brother Jairo Urueta, General Delegate for the Latin American Region, and on the behalf of the General Delegation, the Superior, Brother José Merced Ulloa, and the Delegation Counsellor, Brother José Luis García, who is also acting as Secretary of the Visitation in some of the Centres.

 

Camagüey (Cuba) was the first Centre and Community visited, taking the opportunity to celebrate Mass in the Church of Saint John of God which is home to the mortal remains of Blessed José Olallo Valdés. This Centre cares for a group of elderly residents, and another group in the Day Centre, a Social Canteen and a Physical Rehabilitation outpatient unit for adults. It is planned to inaugurate the extension to the Home shortly.

 

In Havana (Cuba) the Visitor visited the San Rafael Community and Home (Marianao), which is a residential Centre for the elderly, and runs a Day Centre, a Social Canteen and other care for people in financial straits. The other Centre and Community is the Sanatorio San Juan de Dios (La Fortuna) mental health hospital, providing both outpatient and inpatient care.

 

The next country visited was Honduras where there is a Saint John of God Community and Hospital at San Pedro Sula, dedicated to providing Mental Health Care; at the present time it provides outpatient care and runs a Day Centre (Salón del Huesped), and it is planned to set up an inpatient unit.

 

The final stage of the visitation is to the Mexico City Community, which is not currently running a care centre, and Zapopan (Mexico) which is the seat of the General Delegation and the Saint John of God Community and Mental Health Hospital.

 

In Guadalajara (Mexico), under the patronage of the Hno. Pedro Vila A.C. Foundation, created by the General Delegation, there is the Saint John Grande Hostel for homeless people and other needy persons.

 

The Visitation will be closed at a Meeting with all the Brothers of the General Delegation which will also discuss the Reconfiguration of the Latin American Region, according to the schedule approved by the Regional government teams.
