The Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God was commissioned 14 years ago by the Rome Diocesan Vicariate to provide training for immigrants arriving in Rome in search of work and to look after the elderly and the disabled. Since they were unqualified to do this we began to train them in conjunction with the Rome City Council in an official capacity. This work has now been taken over by the Fatebenefratelli Foundation which, with its Team of physicians, nurses and qualified technical personnel from the hospital as social volunteers, are working disinterestedly, teaching theory and practice every Sunday and on certain Thursdays, and when the immigrants are free, for a total of 120 hours. The course is free. There are more than 35 lecturers, who teach the subjects and the official programme meeting European Union standards. Yesterday we closed the course which we had begun on February 21, with the award of the Diploma “Basic Course for Home Helpers” for the 27 trainees, mostly women, who had completed the course. The beautiful solemn ceremony was held in the Sala Verde in Tiber Island Hospital was led by the Prior General, Brother Jesús Etayo, who thanked all the lecturers and the trainees for their efforts and their disinterested dedication so that they can continue to perform this most praiseworthy social and humanitarian work; the trainees also expressed their thanks. In a wonderful friendly and family environment everyone shared the refreshments of typical specialties from several countries: Philippines, Romania, Latin America, in a spirit of gratitude and fellowship. We congratulate them all as they go out to for this social service, and on the good training they have been given for the award of the Official Diploma which provides them with job security and opens the doors to them find work.
