365 TESTIMONIES OF HOSPITALITY

Volunteer

Honduras

Elena Durón De Larios

Our Lord called me to become a volunteer of Saint John of God in 2000, shortly after the Brothers reached our city, San Pedro Sula. Together with other Co-worker volunteers, we then set about working to secure land on which the house would be built for the community and for our Community Centre.

The charism of Saint John of God has been handed to us gradually, to increase our joy at working in the Centre every day, in contact with the patients and working together with the Brothers doing everything possible to humanise the patients through the treatment and care we provide.

My vocation to serve also led to my becoming a member of the Friends of Saint John of God, who perform various different activities to raise funds and obtain assistance, to enable the centre to continue treating an increasing number of patients. Sometimes it is very tiring but any fatigue disappears when we see that the patients are receiving their proper treatment, with human warmth and of high quality, and when seeing the friendly and grateful faces of the patients who frequently find it difficult to believe that the Saint John of God Centre is a charitable institution, because the care they receive is excellent, and the patients can greatly improve their quality of life.

I thank God for calling me, and for calling me to Hospitality, to the charism which unites all of us, as brothers and as Christians to jointly build up a more humane world.
