365 TESTIMONIES OF HOSPITALITY

One afternoon I took the Bible in my hands and in it I read the words of Psalm 119 which say to God: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path". At the time I was in hospital and had been in great pain and very close to death. I had been unconscious when I was brought into the hospital and when I woke up it took a while before I realized that I was in hospital. During my hospitalization I often talked with another patient – an old man of 80 years. He told me that when I recovered I should become Brother. I asked him: "I do not have a degree – how can I be a Brother?” One of my cousins was in the patient care team and that cousin introduced me to the Brothers of Saint John of God. As time went by I slowly came to understand that the events of my life had brought me to the point where the plan of God for me was clear. He was offering me a Hospitaller Vocation. If I answered that call and became a Brother I would be able to love and help the poor, the sick and the needy. I feel that God’s word is “a lamp to my feet and a light to my path". Jesus tells us that part of God’s word to us is that: “Whatever you did for the least of (my children), you did for me.”
