Wojciech Ptaszyński

My name is Dr. Wojciech Ptaszyński and I have been involved with the Fatebenefratelli since 1996. At the outset, I worked part-time providing phytotherapy services; since 2000, I have been working full-time at the hospital, first in the out-patient clinic and then in cardiology.

For me, working in a Fatebeneratelli structure is not only a pleasure and an honour, but also an ongoing challenge, because when you work as a professional in a place of this kind you must constantly be willing to devote yourself totally to it both in terms of professionalism and of responsibility.

For years now, I have made an extreme effort to base my life on faith. Working here, I feel that I am also serving the Church and working inside the Church. The daily contact with the Brothers and with the other religious who work in the hospital, the ongoing contact with patients, are factors that allow me to draw ever closer to God;  the things that life has shown me and the Apostolate of the Fatebenefratelli, increasingly, fill my heart with the love of Christ.

Every day, I am able to take part in the Holy Mass and every day at 3:00 p.m., thanks to the loudspeakers installed in the corridors, I am able to listen to the Rosary of Divine Mercy or to other prayers, depending on the liturgical calendar. Several times a day, a priest visits the sick, bringing them the Blessed Sacrament, and bringing them comfort, since the pastoral service is an extremely important part of their therapy, and something that other hospitals do not take into consideration.

As a doctor, I am often in contact with people who are dying and in such situations I can always call the chaplain for the Sacraments because in the Fatebenefratelli hospital it is not just the body that counts but also the soul. Their suffering, allows patients to come into contact with faith, to learn patience by  bearing their pain.

Working here allows me to discover God in every man and when I am in the presence of a patient who has been neglected, through the vision provided me by my faith I am able to perceive in him or her the suffering Christ and this is of great assistance to me, helping me to treat him or her with even more dedication and love than would be otherwise.
